LEARNING OUTCOME Module Expectations Module Aims The aim of the module is to enable students to critically explore the relationship between rights and ethics in the application of law in the social work context. The module will focus on promoting understanding of the relationships between ethically responsive professional practice and the legislative landscape across practice settings and professional contexts. Key legislation will underpin the module and will be contextualised for professional practice with explicit reference to and analysis of case law, service user rights and ethical practice. Learning Outcomes By the end of this module students should be able t‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍o: Demonstrate a critical understanding of the legislative context of social work practice and its relationship to agencies, communities and service users, identifying the implicit and explicit values underpinning these. Evaluate the application of legislation in practice and underpinning principles of rights, needs and partnership. Analyse and critique key pieces of legislation impacting on social work practice in relation to human rights and professional responsibilities. Consider how to apply relevant legislation in practice whilst promoting professional social work values, recognising the challenges of anti-oppressive use of statutory frameworks. Demonstrate the relevance and integration of ethics and legislation in practice and within competing demands of service user rights and needs.
