PART ONE: CREATIVE WRITING
This part of the assignment asks you to use first-person narration from the point of view of one character in Raisin to write :
A diary entry
Your character is Beneatha Younger
Your diary entry or letter should be at least one page long
It should be true to the character in Lorraine Hansberry’s play. It should reveal the character’s dreams/goals and worries/fears, and the way they feel about their family situation.
Remember that a letter has a specific audience (the recipient) while a diary is something people usually write just for themselves. The choice between the two will determine what your character says and how they say it.
PART TWO: PROCESS PAPER
This part of the assignment will be an essay that offers an explanation of the choices you made in your diary or letter. This part should be 3-4 pages long.
Explain in detail how you made your decisions—which scenes, lines, or stage directions helped you determine how the character thinks (with page numbers).
Explain how you worked with at least two sources other than the play (to be provided by Dr. T) in order to understand better both the context of the play and the character you chose. You should discuss the sources you chose and explain what significance it has for the plot, setting, and/or character development in A Raisin in the Sun.
You should also explain at what point in the play your character is writing this (after a specific situation/scene? At the end of the play after they moved out?) How did the moment when they are writing determine what you included in the diary/letter?
