Watch this documentary first:
Screening one :
Your screening assignment this week is two documentaries – both from the PBS Frontline series and produced by Journalist and Media Scholar Michael Rushkoff. They both look at similar content, at two different times in recent history.
The first film – Merchants Of Cool – is from 2001 and deals with a pivotal time when Madison Avenue was realizing that the old advertising models they used to use – based upon the 30 second TV commercial had ended. The Golden Demographic (or Audience) was the Teenager, and they didn’t watch traditional TV. This doc takes a great look at the emergence of social trends at the infancy of the World Wide Web. It seems quaint now.

4 – It has been six years since Generation Like was made. Do you think Rushkoff’s change of opinion on marketing and commercial influence may have changes since 2015?
5 – What’s your opinion? Do you agree that Marketers have as much power and influence over their consumers as Rushkoff fears?
6 – How does the new problems, scandals and pressure from Washington DC, facing Facebook in 2021 change the picture painted about the social media giant in the second documentary. (If you are unaware of the current problems Facebook is having, research it and attribute your sources.)
7 – What is your general reaction to the two films? What surprised you? What confirmed things you already knew and believed?
