Cultural Immersion Proposal Example: Counseling African American Women Experiencing Menopause

This is my proposal. Review the attached documents for assignment details and the grading rubric for the actual assignment. See attachments.

I have selected African American women ages 40–60 who are experiencing perimenopause and menopause as my cultural immersion group.

I chose this group because midlife African American women share experiences shaped by race, gender, culture, and aging, and they are often affected by health and mental health disparities. This group is relevant to my counseling preparation because women in this age range frequently seek support for emotional well-being, stress, and major life transitions related to menopause.

I recognize that I may hold assumptions about how African American women experience menopause, including beliefs about emotional strength, coping, and help-seeking. I may also underestimate the impact of systemic racism and healthcare bias on their experiences. This immersion will help me challenge these assumptions and better understand their lived experiences.

I plan to connect with a community leader involved in women’s wellness or menopause education to guide my engagement. I will attend at least three group gatherings, such as wellness workshops, faith-based women’s groups, or community health events, and complete reflective journal entries after each experience.

Step 1: Start With a Clear Cultural Immersion Focus

Begin by clearly identifying your cultural immersion group. Your introduction should specify:

  • The population (race, gender, age range)

  • The shared experience or life stage

  • Why this group qualifies as a “cultural” group within the context of counseling

Keep this section concise but specific. Avoid vague descriptions. Instructors are looking for clarity and intentionality.

Step 2: Explain Why This Group Is Relevant to Counseling Practice

In this section, connect your chosen group to your future role as a counselor. Address:

  • Common mental health or emotional concerns faced by the group

  • Life transitions or stressors relevant to counseling work

  • How counselors may realistically encounter this population in practice

Use professional language and demonstrate awareness of counseling settings (community agencies, healthcare, faith-based spaces, etc.).

Step 3: Acknowledge Personal Assumptions and Biases

This is a critical grading area. Thoughtfully reflect on:

  • Assumptions you may hold about coping, strength, or help-seeking

  • Cultural stereotypes or societal narratives that may influence your perceptions

  • How systemic issues (racism, healthcare bias, access barriers) may shape experiences

Be honest but professional. Reflection is not about guilt — it’s about self-awareness and growth.

Step 4: Describe Your Immersion Plan in Detail

Outline exactly how you will engage with the group. Strong proposals include:

  • Who you will connect with (community leaders, educators, facilitators)

  • Types of events or gatherings you will attend

  • The minimum number of interactions required by the assignment

Avoid general statements like “I will learn about the culture.” Be concrete and intentional.

Step 5: Explain How You Will Reflect on the Experience

Most cultural immersion assignments require reflection. Clearly state:

  • That you will complete reflective journal entries

  • When reflections will be completed (after each experience)

  • How reflection supports cultural humility and counselor development

This shows alignment with experiential learning goals and the grading rubric.

Step 6: Maintain a Professional, Tutor-Appropriate Tone

Throughout your paper:

  • Write in first person when reflecting

  • Use clear, academic language without being overly complex

  • Stay respectful, culturally sensitive, and reflective

Proofread for clarity, grammar, and flow before submitting.
