Understanding Research Questions, Methodological Approaches, and Quantitative vs. Qualitative Studies

Initial Response due by Saturday Night / Peer Response due by Sunday Night

DIRECTIONS: Answer the prompt(s) below utilizing the assigned reading(s)  and substantively participate in at least one of your peers’ post. That means your replies to your colleagues’ posts must be either important to their making improvements or meaningful to their understanding.

Read the posts and comments prior to yours so you can avoid repeating information others have written. If you want to discuss similar thoughts or observations, reference what others have said and perform one of the following operations:

  • add a new insight to the thought or observation
  • provide a different example and clarify what additional nuances it reveals
  • discuss the causes or implications of the thought or observation, or
  • compare, contrast, or otherwise relate the thought or observation to other thoughts or observations, and explain what nuances that process reveals.

1. Identify a research question in a journal article and discuss what approach would be best to study the question and why.

2. Take a topic that you would like to study, and using the four combinations of worldviews, designs, and research methods in Figure 1.1, discuss a project that brings together a worldview, designs, and methods. Identify whether this would be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods research. Use the typical scenarios that we have advanced in this chapter as a guide.

3. What distinguishes a quantitative study from a qualitative study? Mention three characteristics.

REMINDER:

All reading discussions and assignments in this course must adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition). This includes:

  • Proper use of in-text citations for all referenced material.
  • Formatting of the reference list with correct structure, including hanging indents.
  • Compliance with APA style for paper structure, including title pages, headings, margins, font (12-point Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri), double-spacing, and page numbers (when applicable).
  • Accurate presentation of tables, figures, and statistical data, when applicable.

Submissions that do not conform to APA 7th Edition formatting will receive feedback for revision and may incur point deductions according to the grading rubric. Students are encouraged to consult the Purdue OWL APA guide or the APA Manual for guidance.

By following these standards, you will develop professional academic writing skills and prepare for higher-level research and publication expectations.

Step-by-Step Guide to Completing This Discussion

Step 1: Prepare by Reviewing the Assigned Readings

Before posting, carefully review the assigned textbook chapter, especially Figure 1.1, which explains the relationships among:

  • Worldviews

  • Research designs

  • Research methods

Also review at least one peer-reviewed journal article, as you will need it to answer Question 1.

Step 2: Answer Question 1 – Research Question and Approach

Choose a journal article relevant to your field of interest and:

  • Clearly state the research question posed by the authors

  • Identify the most appropriate research approach (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods)

  • Explain why this approach best fits the research question

Support your explanation using concepts from the textbook and include an APA-formatted in-text citation.

Step 3: Answer Question 2 – Worldview, Design, and Methods

Select a topic you would personally like to study (e.g., healthcare access, leadership effectiveness, student outcomes). Then:

  • Identify the worldview (e.g., postpositivist, constructivist, pragmatic)

  • Choose an appropriate research design (experimental, phenomenological, case study, etc.)

  • Select the methods (surveys, interviews, observations, document analysis)

Clearly state whether the project would be quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, and explain how these elements align.

Step 4: Answer Question 3 – Quantitative vs. Qualitative Studies

Clearly distinguish quantitative and qualitative research by discussing three characteristics, such as:

  • Type of data collected

  • Research purpose

  • Role of the researcher

  • Use of statistical analysis vs. thematic interpretation

Be concise but precise, and connect your explanation to course readings.

Step 5: Engage in a Meaningful Peer Response

Respond to at least one peer by doing one of the following:

  • Add a new insight to their post

  • Offer a different example that deepens understanding

  • Discuss implications or causes related to their argument

  • Compare or contrast their ideas with another perspective

Avoid repeating their content—your goal is to advance the discussion.

Step 6: Apply APA 7th Edition Standards

Before submitting, ensure:

  • All sources are cited in APA 7th Edition format

  • References include proper formatting and hanging indents

  • Writing is clear, professional, and academic

  • Grammar and mechanics are polished
