Public and Community Health Nursing – Vulnerable Population Presentation

Public and community health nursing involves working with vulnerable populations as equal partners with a focus on primary prevention and health promotion. Nurses should incorporate evidence-based nursing practices that demonstrate an awareness of ethnic identities, cultures, and sociocultural practices of local clientele. In this assignment, you will design healthcare education for individuals, families, and communities from a vulnerable population of your choice.

The objectives of this assignment are to:

· Research a current event in public and community health.

· Increase your understanding of a particular area of public and community health.

· Critically evaluate current processes that support a vulnerable population or community, and increases its ability to be healthy.

This assignment requires critical thinking to develop a reasoned, supported opinion of your target population’s vulnerabilities. You should explore your existing attitudes, thoughts, and intrinsic beliefs regarding the health issues of this population.

You will present your findings to the class via PowerPoint presentation during Weeks three through six. Be sure you encourage class participation and interaction during the presentation. Review the rubric for additional details.

Below are some examples of vulnerable populations. You may pick one from the list below or choose a different population with approval of instructor. For this presentation, use at least six references. Each reference must be current, no older than five years.

· Victims of abuse/violence

Please use the rubric as a guide for your presentations.

Please submit a copy of your presentation with the rubric attached. Otherwise, it will not be graded.

Step-by-Step Guide to Designing Your Presentation

Step 1: Select Your Vulnerable Population

  • Choose a population you are interested in and can find sufficient research on.

  • For example: victims of domestic abuse or intimate partner violence.

Step 2: Research Current Public and Community Health Events

  • Use credible sources like PubMed, CINAHL, government reports (CDC, WHO), or peer-reviewed journals.

  • Identify current trends, policies, or interventions affecting your population.

  • Look for statistics, health risks, and social determinants impacting the population.

Step 3: Identify Vulnerabilities

  • Examine factors that increase health risks for your population:

    • Social determinants (poverty, housing, access to healthcare)

    • Cultural or linguistic barriers

    • Exposure to violence or trauma

    • Chronic illness or mental health issues

Step 4: Critically Evaluate Current Processes

  • What programs, policies, or interventions currently support the population?

  • Are these interventions effective?

  • Identify gaps in care or areas for improvement.

Step 5: Develop Evidence-Based Health Education Content

  • Focus on primary prevention and health promotion.

  • Include culturally competent strategies tailored to your population.

  • Use current research and best practices to support your recommendations.

Step 6: Design Your PowerPoint Presentation

  • Slide Structure Suggestions:

    1. Title Slide – Population, your name, course info

    2. Introduction – Brief overview of population and relevance to public health

    3. Current Event/Trend – Highlight recent news, policy, or research

    4. Vulnerabilities – Key health risks and contributing factors

    5. Current Interventions – Programs or policies in place

    6. Gaps in Care – Identify shortcomings or areas needing improvement

    7. Evidence-Based Recommendations – Health education strategies

    8. Cultural Considerations – How your recommendations respect diversity

    9. Conclusion – Summary and call to action

    10. References – APA-formatted list of at least six sources

Step 7: Encourage Class Participation

  • Include interactive components, such as:

    • Short polls or quizzes

    • Case scenarios for discussion

    • Reflection questions or group activities

Step 8: Attach Rubric and Submit

  • Review the grading rubric carefully to ensure all required components are included.

  • Submit your PowerPoint file along with the rubric attached for grading.
