Planning the Perfect Family Dinner: A Work Breakdown

QSO 355 Module Two Activity Guidelines and Rubric

Note: This activity is designed to give you practice in creating a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) Dictionary, which you will do for your final project in Milestone One.

For an introduction to the WBS, complete the Module Two WBS Dictionary Template Spreadsheet, which is linked in the What to Submit section below, for an upcoming dinner. This WBS Dictionary should detail the steps involved in planning and executing a dinner for your family. This template will be the basis for another assignment during Module Five. (You might want to look at the Module Five Activity Guidelines and Rubric in the Assignment Guidelines and Rubrics section to see how that project is set up.) The focus here is for you to gain an understanding of the tool.

See the video in the Reading and Resources section for more information regarding a work breakdown structure (WBS) and how to create one.

Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:

  • WBS ID: Your dinner WBS should break your dinner project down into small deliverables. Each of these deliverables should follow the correct numeric WBS identification. The ID convention is described in the above video links. Each detail of lines 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 should be retained.
  • Task Name: Each deliverable needs a name. Each detail of lines 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 should be retained.
  • Description: Each deliverable needs a description of the work involved. Each detail of lines 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 should be retained.

Please remember that this assignment is an opportunity for you to show that you understand how a WBS Dictionary is used.

What to Submit

This activity will be submitted using the WBS Dictionary Template Spreadsheet . Any outside references should be cited in APA format but are not required.

Step 1: Understand the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

  • A WBS breaks a project into smaller, manageable deliverables and tasks.

  • Each deliverable should have:

    • WBS ID – a hierarchical number that shows where the task fits in the overall project.

    • Task Name – a clear title describing the deliverable.

    • Description – a detailed explanation of the work involved in completing the task.

  • Think of the WBS like a family tree for tasks: top-level deliverables branch into smaller tasks.

Step 2: Identify Your Main Deliverable

  • Your project is planning and executing a family dinner.

  • The top-level WBS ID is usually 1.0 for the main project.

  • Example:

    • 1.0 Dinner Planning and Execution

Step 3: Break the Project into Smaller Deliverables

  • Think about the steps needed to prepare a dinner. Examples:
    1.1 Menu Planning
    1.2 Grocery Shopping
    1.3 Meal Preparation
    1.4 Setting the Table
    1.5 Dinner Service

  • Each of these becomes a WBS deliverable with a corresponding ID:

    • 1.1 Menu Planning

    • 1.2 Grocery Shopping

    • etc.

Step 4: Add Task Names and Descriptions

  • For each deliverable, add specific tasks and descriptions. Example:

WBS ID Task Name Description
1.1 Menu Planning Decide the dishes for the dinner, including appetizers, main course, sides, and dessert. Consider dietary restrictions and preferences of family members.
1.2 Grocery Shopping Create a shopping list from the menu. Visit the store or order online for all required ingredients. Check pantry for existing supplies.
1.3 Meal Preparation Cook each dish according to recipes. Prepare ingredients, manage cooking times, and ensure food quality and safety.
1.4 Setting the Table Arrange tableware, utensils, napkins, and decorations. Ensure seating accommodates all family members.
1.5 Dinner Service Serve food to family members. Monitor timing and temperature of dishes. Clean as you go to maintain a smooth dinner flow.
  • Tip: Be specific in descriptions—rubric emphasizes detail.

Step 5: Ensure Proper WBS ID Structure

  • Use hierarchical numbering:

    • Top-level: 1.0

    • Second-level: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3…

    • Third-level (optional subtasks): 1.1.1, 1.1.2…

  • This helps show task relationships and makes your WBS easy to read.

Step 6: Communicate Clearly

  • Organize the WBS dictionary logically and consistently.

  • Use clear, concise language. Avoid vague descriptions like “do stuff” or “prepare things.”

  • Think about your audience: someone unfamiliar with your dinner should understand exactly what each task entails.

Step 7: Submit Using the Template

  • Fill out the Module Two WBS Dictionary Template Spreadsheet.

  • Include all WBS IDs, task names, and detailed descriptions.

  • APA citations are optional if you refer to external resources (e.g., recipes or planning guides).

Tips to Maximize Your Grade

  • Each deliverable must be small and specific—don’t lump multiple activities together.

  • Check your WBS against the rubric:

    • WBS ID: clear, hierarchical, complete

    • Task Name: descriptive and accurate

    • Description: detailed and specific

    • Communication: organized, logical, professional

  • Optional: Add subtasks under main tasks if you want to show a deeper breakdown (e.g., 1.3.1 Chop vegetables, 1.3.2 Cook main dish).
