ENABLERS AND BARRIERS TO TRANSLATION

There are many hurdles to overcome when it comes to the translation of evidence into practice. As noted in White et al. (2024), of all the identified evidence, only about half of it is ever actually put into practice. Thus, being able to detect the potential enablers and barriers that you may encounter when implementing an EBP initiative is critical to your success. For this Discussion, you will draw on your professional experience in healthcare settings to consider specific enablers and barriers to evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiatives.

TO PREPARE
- Review the Week 7 Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to the theories and best practice recommendations related to enablers and barriers to translating and applying evidence in support of practice or organization change initiatives.
- Select an organization and a practice or organization issue within that organization. Consider evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiatives to address the issue.
- Select one evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiative on which to focus for this Discussion. Note: You may reuse an initiative you selected earlier in this course or select a new one.

- Describe the types of barriers that you might encounter when translating and applying evidence for the evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiative. Be specific and explain how barriers may challenge the project.
- Explain how, as a DNP-prepared nurse, you would address the barriers you identified. Be specific and describe specific approaches to address each barrier.

Step 1: Clearly Identify the Organization
Begin your paper by naming the healthcare organization you are focusing on (e.g., acute care hospital, outpatient clinic, long-term care facility). Briefly describe its setting, patient population, and services provided. This context helps the reader understand the environment where the EBP initiative will be implemented.
Tip: Choose an organization you are familiar with professionally to strengthen your analysis and support your discussion with real-world insight.
Step 2: Describe the Practice or Organizational Issue
Next, explain the specific clinical or organizational problem that needs improvement. Clearly state why this issue is significant, including its impact on patient outcomes, staff workflow, safety, or quality of care. Support your description with scholarly evidence or quality metrics when possible.

Step 3: Identify the EBP Quality Improvement Initiative
Describe the evidence-based practice (EBP) quality improvement (QI) initiative selected to address the issue. Explain what the initiative involves and why it is appropriate for the identified problem. Reference current research or clinical guidelines that support the initiative’s effectiveness.
Step 4: Discuss Enablers to Translation of Evidence
Identify specific enablers that could support successful implementation of the EBP initiative. Examples include leadership support, organizational culture, access to education, interprofessional collaboration, or availability of resources. Clearly explain how each enabler contributes to project success and improves outcomes.
Step 5: Identify Barriers to Translation of Evidence
Discuss potential barriers that may hinder the initiative, such as staff resistance, limited time, lack of resources, insufficient training, or organizational constraints. Be specific and explain how each barrier could challenge implementation or sustainability.
Step 6: Explain How a DNP-Prepared Nurse Would Address Barriers
Demonstrate doctoral-level thinking by explaining how you would address each identified barrier. Use leadership strategies such as stakeholder engagement, staff education, policy advocacy, change management models, and data-driven decision-making. Clearly connect each strategy to the corresponding barrier.
Key expectation: This section should reflect advanced nursing leadership and systems-level thinking.
Step 7: Meet Scholarly and APA Requirements
Ensure your post is at least 500 words, uses APA-formatted in-text citations, and is supported by scholarly sources. Personal experiences may be included but must supplement—not replace—academic evidence.
