✅ Step-by-Step Guide to Writing Your 1-Page Reflection On a U.S. Health Issue and the Role of Society
1. Choose a Major U.S. Health Issue
Choose one that is widespread and socially conditioned, such as:

Obesity

Diabetes

Heart disease

Mental health (anxiety, depression)

Substance abuse

Opioid addiction

Smoking

Hypertension

SampleObesity is taken as the example here.

2. Introduction Paragraph (2–3 Sentences)
Identify your chosen health issue.

Explain why it matters in the U.S.

Example:
The health issue I have chosen for this assignment is obesity. It is a grave problem in the United States, with over 40% of adults being impacted and it also contributing to other dire conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

3. Describe the Role of Society (2–3 Paragraphs)
Explain how society
impacts this health problem.

At least one course concept, such as:

Socialization

Social inequality

Socioeconomic status

Cultural norms

Access to healthcare

Food deserts

Media influence

Example:
Society plays a strong role in the behavior and health outcomes of obesity. As an illustration, in poorer neighborhoods throughout the country, there are simply not a lot of fruits and vegetables available to easily buy. This results in these neighborhoods having what has been called a “food desert,” where fast food is much more accessible than meals. These are environmental impacts brought about by overall socioeconomic inequalities, an essential concept of the way in which social systems impact personal health.

Cultural values are also at play in this issue. Portion sizes in the US are significantly larger elsewhere, and foods with high calories are marketed as inexpensive and convenient. This desensitization of bad eating is a sign of the power of consumerism and mass media—both are enormous social forces that influence our day-to-day choices.

 4. Reflection and Link to Healthcare (1 Paragraph)
Explain why it is important that health professionals are aware of these social influences.

Think about how this information shapes your perspective.

Example:
As a health providerknowing that social factors influence obesity allows me to treat more empathetically and sensitively. Instead of just viewing obesity as the result of individual choices, I now comprehend it as an interrelated problem influenced by social circumstancesfinancial limitations, and cultural forces. This allows more effective communication, more realistic care, and better advocacy for population-level interventions.

 Final Tips
Keep your reflection to one page (
approx. 300–350 words)

Use simplenon-jargon language

Proofread using MS Word spell check or Grammarly
