Demonstrating Mastery of NONPF Competencies and Nurse Practitioner Advocacy

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has determined nine broad areas of core competence that apply to all nurse practitioners, regardless of specialty or patient population focus. NONPF created the first set of Nurse Practitioner Competencies in 1990; the most recent updates were incorporated in 2017. This course was designed to prepare you to synthesize knowledge gained throughout the program and to apply each of the nine core competencies within your selected areas of practice and your representative communities.

The nine areas of competency are:

  • Scientific Foundations
  • Leadership
  • Quality
  • Practice Inquiry
  • Technology and Information Literacy
  • Policy
  • Health Delivery System
  • Ethics
  • Independent Practice

Step-by-Step Guide for Structuring and Writing Your Paper:

Step 1: Understand the Task
You must write a paragraph for each of the nine NONPF core competencies, reflecting on how your educational experience prepared you to meet them. Then, you’ll add two final sections:

  • A paragraph about your role in social change as a nurse practitioner.

  • A paragraph describing 1–2 legislative or advocacy activities by your state NP organization (e.g., your state’s AANP affiliate).

Step 2: Use Clear Headings for Each Section
Organize your paper with subheadings for each competency and the two final components. This makes it easier to structure and easier to read.

Example Structure and Content Outline:

1. Scientific Foundations
Explain how your coursework built a strong foundation in pathophysiology, pharmacology, and evidence-based practice. Mention specific projects or classes that helped strengthen your understanding.

2. Leadership
Discuss leadership roles you took during clinical rotations or group assignments. Mention development of communication, team-building, or decision-making skills.

3. Quality
Explain how the program taught you to assess and improve care quality. Include examples such as quality improvement projects or learning about healthcare metrics.

4. Practice Inquiry
Describe how you engaged with clinical inquiry, such as participating in a research paper or utilizing data to inform practice decisions.

5. Technology and Information Literacy
Talk about learning to use electronic health records, telehealth tools, or digital databases. Mention how you’ve applied this knowledge in simulations or practice.

6. Policy
Explain how you were educated on healthcare policy and advocacy, and how it shaped your awareness of regulatory and reimbursement issues.

7. Health Delivery System
Discuss how your education covered systems-based practice, including care coordination, interdisciplinary collaboration, and patient-centered models.

8. Ethics
Describe how you learned to handle ethical dilemmas, patient autonomy, and professional integrity, possibly including classroom debates or case studies.

9. Independent Practice
Reflect on clinical placements that developed your skills in autonomous patient care, assessment, and clinical judgment.

Step 3: Describe Your Commitment to Social Change
In one paragraph, explain how you plan to address health disparities, improve access to care, or advocate for underserved populations in your local or regional community.

Step 4: Research and Include Legislative or Advocacy Activities
Look up your state’s NP organization (like the Texas Nurse Practitioners or California Association for Nurse Practitioners) and describe one or two current legislative efforts or advocacy events. Be specific—mention bills, campaigns, or coalition work.

Step 5: Final Edits

  • Use professional, clear language appropriate for academic writing.

  • Proofread for grammar and consistency.

  • Ensure your paragraphs flow logically and remain on-topic.
