Step-by-Step Guide: How to Structure and Complete Your 30-Second Commercial Storyboard

This assignment challenges you to blend creativity with structure by applying motion design to a Samsung commercial storyboard. Let’s break it down:

Step 1: Understand the Assignment

Before drawing anything, read these files carefully:

  • Samsung_CommercialScript_4.5.pdf – This is your script. It includes dialog and scene instructions.

  • Samsung_Brief_4.5.pdf – This outlines the product focus, target audience, tone, and brand identity.

  • Optional: Download SamsungDiamond_Logos.zip and MotionIcons_4.4.zip to add motion and branding visuals to your storyboard.

Step 2: Gather Materials

You’ll need:

  • Pencil and paper

  • A printer (optional, for storyboard templates)

  • A phone/scanner to capture your drawings

  • PowerPoint for digital submission

Optional Downloads:

  • [Storyboard Template PDF] – to make formatting easier

  • [MotionIcons_4.4.zip] – for drag-and-drop movement indicators

Step 3: Plan Your 8-Panel Storyboard

Each panel should represent about 3–4 seconds of screen time in a 30-second commercial.
Your storyboard should:

  • Follow the script exactly

  • Match the branding and tone of Samsung

  • Show camera framing, movement, and motion effects

  • Include dialog below each panel at the moment it happens

Step 4: Sketch Your Storyboard

  • Draw each of the 8 panels on paper. Keep it clean and legible.

  • Think about:

    • Shot types: close-up, medium, wide

    • Transitions: fade in/out, cuts

    • Movement: zoom, pan, spin (use icons or sketch arrows)

    • Composition: product placement, symmetry, background

Step 5: Capture Your Panels Digitally

  • Take clear photos or scan your 8-panel storyboard.

  • Insert each image into a separate slide in PowerPoint.

  • If using motion icons, drag them from the ZIP folder into the PowerPoint and overlay them as needed.

  • Type in the dialog under each panel, aligned with your storyboard frame.

Step 6: Finalize and Submit

  • Title your PowerPoint file: FirstNameLastName_30SecCommercial4.4.pptx

  • Review for clarity, proper flow, and alignment with the script.

  • Upload your final PowerPoint to the assignment portal.

📝 Pro Tips:

  • Use directional arrows to show movement (e.g., zoom in, slide left).

  • Refer to real commercials for inspiration on visual storytelling.

  • Stay true to Samsung’s modern, tech-savvy branding.
