For this discussion, I’ll focus on the Penitentiary Era (1790-1830) in American corrections, which played a significant role in shaping the foundation of the modern prison system. During this period, the Pennsylvania System was developed, emphasizing solitary confinement and the idea that prisoners could be rehabilitated through reflection and penance. Prisons were seen as places of moral reform rather than mere punishment. The emphasis was on rehabilitation and transformation, where individuals could find redemption by separating themselves from corrupting influences.

Today, the current state of American corrections still grapples with the legacy of that era, especially in how we view rehabilitation. Despite the rise of mass incarceration and the shift towards more punitive approaches, the ideals of rehabilitation and reform continue to be discussed in policy debates. However, it can be argued that the focus on rehabilitation has diminished in favor of incarceration for punishment, especially given the high rates of recidivism and overcrowded prisons.

In my opinion, the current state of corrections in the U.S. could benefit from revisiting the reforms of the Penitentiary Era. Modern correctional systems often fail to provide adequate rehabilitative programs, which could help reduce recidivism and aid reintegration into society. Reintroducing reformative elements could lead to more positive outcomes for both inmates and society, providing a better balance between punishment and rehabilitation.
