Reviewing a Company’s Mission Statement: A Personal Analysis

For this assignment, what I want you to do is look up the mission statement for a company that you like, admire, purchase products from, etc. In reviewing the mission statement for this company, think about the following questions:
1. Was it difficult to find the mission statement for your company? If so, why do you think that is the case? Do you think it would be helpful for the company if the mission statement was more easily accessible?
2. Were you surprised by the stated mission of the company? Does the mission statement of your company match what you know about them and/or how they advertise themselves to the public (through social media, marketing, etc.)? If not, what do you think accounts for this mismatch?
3. How well does the mission statement of your company match (or not) with your own personal values? Does knowing the mission statement of your company make you more or less likely to support them in the future?

Step 1: Select a Company

  • Choose a company you like, admire, or frequently purchase products from. Examples include Apple, Nike, Starbucks, Patagonia, or any company you connect with.
  • Make sure the company has a published mission statement (most can be found on the company’s website under sections like “About Us” or “Mission and Values”).

Step 2: Find the Mission Statement

  • Use the company’s official website as your primary source.
  • If the mission statement is hard to locate, try searching “[Company Name] mission statement” on a search engine.
  • Note whether finding the mission statement was easy or difficult. Reflect on why this might be the case and whether improving accessibility would benefit the company.

Step 3: Analyze the Mission Statement

  1. Question 1: Accessibility
    • Was the mission statement easy or hard to find?
    • If difficult, why do you think the company doesn’t prioritize making it easily accessible?
    • Suggest ways the company could improve visibility, such as placing it prominently on their homepage or social media.
  2. Question 2: Alignment with Public Perception
    • Reflect on whether the mission statement aligns with your knowledge of the company.
    • Does it match how they present themselves on social media, in marketing campaigns, or in customer service?
    • If there’s a mismatch, speculate on the reasons (e.g., outdated mission, lack of alignment between stated goals and actions).
  3. Question 3: Personal Connection
    • Compare the company’s mission statement to your personal values.
    • Does it align with what you believe in?
    • Consider whether knowing the mission statement makes you more or less likely to continue supporting the company.

Step 4: Structure Your Discussion Post

  • Paragraph 1: Introduce the company you selected and provide their mission statement.
  • Paragraph 2: Discuss the accessibility of the mission statement (Was it easy to find? Could it be improved?).
  • Paragraph 3: Analyze whether the mission statement aligns with how the company presents itself publicly.
  • Paragraph 4: Reflect on how the mission statement aligns with your personal values and whether it impacts your future support for the company.

Step 5: Engage with Other Threads

  • After submitting your post, read other students’ threads and compare their experiences with your own.
  • Reply thoughtfully to at least two threads, offering your perspective or agreeing/disagreeing with their analysis.
