Assignment Content
Assignment objective: This course has presented an evolving scenario involving the City of Washington Distribution Warehouse fire. Throughout your reading and analysis of the fire, you have been presented with a multitude of information that that will allow you to make recommendation to those charged with designing the suppression system in the new building. This assignment consists of four parts and your project must be at least four-pages in length (at least one page per section).
Details: Section I
As you make suggestions to improve the water-based fire sprinkler system, refer to the background information, if needed, to provide you with the necessary material to identify the basic components common to fire protection for the City of Washington Distribution Warehouse. In addition, review the Points to Ponder Scenario in the Unit V Lesson for additional information.
This assignment is not looking for compliance with building codes nor expecting you to be a fire protection system designer. However, the purpose of this assignment is for you to apply the concepts and knowledge you learned in this unit as you begin writing your final project covering protection systems that will detect, contain, control, and extinguish a fire. This assignment provides you with the opportunity to use your skills, expertise, and experience to enrich your response.
Prepare a well-organized narrative that addresses foam- and water-based fire sprinkler systems and includes your recommendations after reviewing the background information and the information above. Your discussion will consist of your evaluation of the previous water-based sprinkler system, based on information from the textbook and any additional research needed for your recommendations for the rebuild of the warehouse. Discuss the importance of water pressure, and determine the pressure for seven sprinkler heads discharging 157.5 gallons of water per minute.
Section II
As you make suggestions to improve the fire protection system, identify the components and accessories common to fire pump installations needed for the rebuild of the warehouse. Refer to the background information, if needed, to provide you with the necessary material to identify the basic components common to fire protection for the City of Washington Distribution Warehouse. In addition, review the Points to Ponder Scenario in the Unit VII Lesson for additional information as well as Chapter 6 in the textbook. FIRE PROTECTION, DETECTION, AND SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS FIFTH EDITION
Prepare a well-organized narrative addressing fire pumps and including your recommendations after reviewing the background information and the information above. Your discussion will consist of your evaluation of the previous fire pump and recommendations for the rebuild of the warehouse, based on information from the textbook and any additional research.
Section III
As we saw in the Points to Ponder Scenario in the unit lesson, electrical surge protection devices could have mitigated damage or even loss to the pump driver. Describe the benefits that surge protection devices provide for fire pump components and systems against the damages of voltage surges.
Section IV (Executive Summary)
In this section, you will prepare a well-organized and thoughtful summary of your recommendations for the fire protection system for the scenario-based case study course project on the City of Washington Distribution Warehouse fire. This summary should expound on what you have learned during the different parts covered in each unit, so you can understand issues that exist within the fire protection technology field. Place the summary after the title page, and follow it with your recommendations for the rebuilding of the warehouse.
The purpose of the executive summary is to provide a narrative about the project with sufficient detail to allow readers to be able to accurately describe your recommendations to resolve potential fires in the future. Explain how your recommendations for the scenario-based case study relate to the methodology you chose and to the project outcome and conclusions. In other words, your summary must be clear, logical, and demonstrate alignment among the goals, methods, and outcomes.
References: Remember, you may use information from reputable, reliable journal articles, case studies, scholarly papers, and other sources that you feel are pertinent. You should use at least three sources, one of which must be your textbook. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations following proper APA Style.
Submission: Save as a Word document and upload the document to Blackboard.
Grading: The project will be reviewed in alignment to the criteria, focused on an understanding and analysis of the assignment and application of the relevant theories.

Step-by-Step Guide for Writing Your Fire Protection System Paper
Step 1: Understand the Assignment Overview The assignment consists of four main sections, each focusing on different aspects of the fire protection system for the City of Washington Distribution Warehouse. Here’s how to break down each section:
- Section I: Review the previous water-based sprinkler system, make suggestions for improvements, and discuss the importance of water pressure for fire sprinklers.
- Section II: Evaluate the fire pump installation and propose improvements based on research.
- Section III: Analyze surge protection devices and their benefits for fire pump systems.
- Section IV: Write an executive summary that ties together all of your recommendations and findings.
Each section should be about one page long, making your paper at least four pages in total.
Step 2: Organize Your Paper Structure your paper into clear, well-defined sections. Here’s how to approach each section:
- Title Page: Include the title of your project, your name, and any other required information.
- Executive Summary (Section IV): This should be the first thing after the title page. It provides a snapshot of your recommendations and the overall fire protection strategy.
- Main Sections (I-III): Follow the order provided in the instructions and ensure each section addresses the key points outlined.
Step 3: Section I – Foam- and Water-Based Fire Sprinkler Systems
- Review the Previous System: Start by discussing the existing water-based sprinkler system and its effectiveness in the previous scenario.
- Identify Key Components: Refer to your textbook to identify the components of a good sprinkler system (e.g., sprinklers, water pressure, pumps).
- Recommendations: Provide your suggestions for improving the system based on your analysis. Focus on water pressure, especially for seven sprinkler heads discharging 157.5 gallons of water per minute.
- Textbook Integration: Use your course text, Fire Protection, Detection, and Suppression Systems, to back up your analysis and recommendations.
Step 4: Section II – Fire Pump Components
- Evaluate the Existing Fire Pump: Discuss the current fire pump setup, what worked well, and areas needing improvement.
- Identify Common Components: Using the textbook and other research sources, list the key components and accessories necessary for fire pump installations.
- Make Recommendations: Suggest upgrades or changes to improve the system for the warehouse rebuild.
- Research Support: Include any additional sources, such as journal articles, that support your recommendations.
Step 5: Section III – Surge Protection Devices
- Understand the Role of Surge Protection: Discuss how surge protection devices can prevent damage to the fire pump components, especially against voltage surges.
- Explain Benefits: Describe the specific benefits these devices offer, using examples from the course material and other reliable sources.
Step 6: Section IV – Executive Summary
- Summarize Key Recommendations: The executive summary should provide a concise overview of your suggestions from all three sections.
- Align with Methodology: Make sure the summary clearly ties together your recommendations with the methods you used to analyze the problem and reach conclusions.
- Demonstrate Understanding: Ensure the summary shows a clear understanding of the fire protection system’s role in preventing and controlling future fires at the warehouse.
Step 7: Cite and Reference Your Sources
- Use at least three sources, one of which must be your course textbook. Include reputable journal articles, case studies, or research papers to strengthen your arguments.
- Use proper APA citations for all paraphrased and quoted material in the body of the paper and in the reference list.
Step 8: Review and Edit Before submitting your paper, make sure to:
- Check for clarity and coherence. Each section should logically flow into the next.
- Proofread for grammar, spelling, and APA formatting errors.
- Ensure that your analysis is comprehensive and addresses all parts of the assignment.
