This is a portion of my research paper, so should be treated as such. This portion regards the production context of my artifact. My artifact for the research paper is Ferrero Group’s press releases following their 2022 salmonella scandal.
Below is the outline for writing this section. Please utilize this for and sections that are applicable to make a cohesive paper:
I. Situational Context
A. Situational context: Date, time, place artifact’s message was delivered, medium and network of delivery
II. Social Historical Circumstances
A. Exigences/events/social justice issues that gave rise to the artifact
1. Exigence: Prior discourse, decision, event or controversy that prompted artifact
2. Events and social justice issues might include laws; economics; educational, religious, civil or human rights issues; social movements, etc., that are relevant to artifact
3. Scholarly literature and popular press typically provide “clues” to such events
B. Relevant cultural attitudes/norms/values that influence artifact’s content
1. Find reputable polling data describing public attitudes toward social issues/controversies at:
a. Gallup.com and Pewresearch.org
b. Scholarly literature on topic
c. News articles about artifact
2. Legal norms/cases can be researched at Lexis Nexis using our library’s database (if relevant)
III. Rhetorical Circumstances (Similar Messages and Artifacts)
A. Similar Artifacts/Messages
1. Is the artifact part of a genre? If so, what are features of this genre? What are other examples in this genre that emerged prior to or around same historical time?
a. Example: If analyzing The Bachelorette, what other reality TV shows have emerged, especially those resembling the same dating theme?
b. Example: If analyzing The Walking Dead, what other films and TV shows about zombies have emerged?
2. Similar Discourse within Earlier Artifacts
a. Is this artifact a sequel, a spin-off?
b. What similarities do you see between the artifact and other discourse circulating at the time?
c. Scholarly literature can be helpful to get a sense of prior discourse
B. Symbols/values within the culture that the artifact incorporates
a. Example: US Constitution’s “Declaration of Independence” was available to MLK in his appeal to “equality”; Disney caricatures in Jay-Z’s “Story of OJ”
b. Example: TV shows featuring working women (e.g., Law & Order: SVU, Scandal, etc.) integrate feminist movement’s critiques of gender discrimination
C. Publicity leading up to debut of artifact
1. What medium was used to promote artifact?
2. What rhetoric is used to promote it to intended audiences?
IV. Rhetor and Audience
A. Who is rhetor/director/producer/singer/artist that created or delivered artifact?
1. What are his/her credentials, reputation, background that preceded the artifact?
2. What does s/he value, not value?
B. Who is audience?
1. Number and demographics of immediate audience members
V. Expectations and values of ideal/intended audience
