Information about assessment 2: Assessment 2: Poster
OVERVIEW
The skin care market is constantly growing and changing over time. Companies and formulators are continuously on the lookout for emerging trends and ways to differentiate their product from all of the others that are on the market. One trend that has emerged over the past few years is interest in the skin microbiome. There are now products that are formulated and include ingredients to support the microbiome with ingredients that can be considered prebiotics and postbiotics. For this assessment you are tasked with researching one of those categories of ingredients and presenting your findings in a poster format. The intention for a poster like this will be to educate professionals who might be recommending products with these types of ingredients (dermal clinicians, dermatologists, dermatological/cosmetic nurses). As a dermal clinician, it is crucial for us to take an evidence based approach to our practice. You, therefore, need to ask yourself, ‘what is the evidence to support the recommendation and use of this type of skincare’.
Your poster should provide an informative, unbiased and well evidenced critique of your chosen topic. LENGTH
Approximately 900 words (this is a rough guide only)
DUE DATE
DETAILS
Students will investigate literature and design a poster to educate fellow professionals about the following:
Prebiotic skincare
or
Postbiotic skincare
INSTRUCTIONS
Begin by familiarising yourself with the terms prebiotic and postbiotic skincare – select one of those two categories to be the topic of your poster;
Search for journal articles on your chosen topic – in this instance a lot of the information you might find via websites and social media will be inaccurate or not well evidenced, please stick to using information from quality sources, such as journal articles;
Your poster will need to address, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:
Definition of the term prebiotic or postbiotic skincare (you only need to define the one that is the topic of your poster);
Why is this type of skincare considered beneficial? What is the evidence supporting this?
What is the mechanism of action for any observed effect? What are the limitations of this evidence? Who might benefit from using this type of skincare?
What types of ingredients might be found in that type of skincare?
How are those ingredients obtained*? Once you have gathered the information you need, design your poster. The poster should:
Be visually engaging and have a logical flow of information;
Be appropriately professional and suitable for an intended audience of health professionals; Include figures (images, graphics, charts etc…) and tables where appropriate;
Include in text references and a reference list in APA style. The reference list needs to be included on the poster itself. TIPS AND FURTHER INFORMAITON
Figures should be clear, labelled and referenced according to the APA style guide and referred to in the text.
Tables and charts should be labelled and referenced according to the APA style guide and referred to in the text. It is preferable to design your own tables and charts. *how are they produced in a laboratory or obtained from nature?

MAKING A POSTER
Making a poster using PowerPoint
One of the easiest ways to put together a poster is by using the program PowerPoint (PPT). Essentially, you are using a single power point slide to format your poster.
Open power point and go to the design tab –> click on slide size –> select custom slide size –> under ‘slides sized for’ select A3 paper from the drop-down list. You can also select if you want a landscape or portrait orientation, click OK.
Your slide will then adjust all the objects you are placing in it (such as text boxes) as though it is an A3 sized sheet. This will give you a lot more room to add the content you need.
