Midterm Policy Paper

At the conclusion of this module, students will be able to:
Identify unethical themes in criminal justice
Discuss theories of racism and the moral guidelines that condemn it

Recommend innovative or new evidence-based policies in criminal justice
Directions:
For this midterm policy paper please select one of the major issues discussed and listed below to
form a change in current policy, an improvement of current policy, or the elimination of current
law or policy. For the assignment, you will want to address the ethical considerations in your
policy position and then use outside research or articles to support your position. Ideally you will
include at least 5 peer-reviewed research articles from the Lasell Library’s database. You can
also find academic journal articles through Google Scholar.
Length and Format: The paper should be 4-5 pages double spaced in Times New Roman 12
Point Font with 1in Margins (APA Format). The cover page would not count towards page
length if you choose to include one.
Grading: The project is graded on the overall quality of the writing, the following of the
directions, and the proper APA format of in-text citations and referencing of sources.
Policy Research Topics/Questions related to Racism and Egoism in Criminal Justice:
Should we continue the Death Penalty in the US?
In terms of the egoism of deadly force (See Ch. 8), what can be done to prevent the
occurrence of unarmed shootings of African American males?
What can be done to prevent racial discrimination within the criminal justice system?
Choose a specific policy/law/practice.
What policies or practices could be employed in criminal justice agencies that would
reduce or eliminate the abuse of authority? For example, would body cameras be a good
investment? Should they be mandatory? How would the video be used?
Paper Outline:
I. Introduction (This is where you tell me about your topic and why it is important as well
as state your hypotheses/position)
II. Part 1: the ethical theory or principle related to your topic (Use the textbook to explain
your ethical reasoning behind the issues you are focusing on)
III. Part 2: your specific recommendation (Summarize your specific issue and tie in your
outside research to provide readers with evidence to support you)
IV. Conclusion (Review what you wrote and remind the reader about why we should adopt
your stance)
V. References (APA style reference page)
