Call for Abstracts – Final Project: Contemporary Philosophy
In Queer Phenomenology, Sara Ahmed offers a phenomenological approach to how bodies take shape through tending towards objects that are reachable, object that are made available within the bodily horizon through the adoption or inheritance of an orientation. For Ahmed, orientation is crucial for how we are not only in relation to object and others, but for how we have a world. As the body is the point from which the world unfolds; and, as the repeated actions of bodies shape the spaces through which they move, Ahmed’s understanding of orientation can offer new ways of understanding how we are in a shared world with other people.
To this end, this final project invites students to apply Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology to a subject of their choosing to reveal how a queer phenomenological approach to their chosen topic can not only reveal what is “behind” the subject of their project, but how their subject is oriented and is orienting. In short, this final project invites students to consider the relevance of queer phenomenology for enhancing or developing their understanding of their chosen subject. Further, this final project also invites students to critically consider any element of interest within Ahmed’s Queer Phenomenology for the sake of developing a unique understanding of the project of queer phenomenology.
Again, the purpose of the final project is to apply Sara Ahmed’s queer phenomenology to an issue or topic of student interest; or, to engage with a specific area of Ahmed’s queer phenomenology.
The deadline for complete abstracts of no less than 300 words is March 15, 2024. Please send questions or inquiries about the theme of the final essay or potential essay topics to Johnathan.flowers@csun.edu. Student may also schedule student hours to discuss abstract development or potential project topics.
Decisions on submitted abstracts will be made by March 18, 2024, with rough drafts due no later than Friday, May 3, 2024. Abstracts will be accepted earlier than the deadline and students may receive responses to their abstracts before March 18. Students may revise their abstracts in response to feedback receives.
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Please submit completed abstract to the “Final Project Topics” assignment on the canvas shell. Completed submission must be in in .doc format, .docx format, pages format, or PDF format. Abstracts submitted as google drive links or as .txt files will not be accepted. Please be sure to follow the format guidelines to ensure that your submissions are received.
Completed abstracts should be written in 12-point Arial, Times New Roman, or Calibri font. Abstracts should be double spaced and no less than three hundred words long. Completed abstracts should also be checked for spelling and grammar and clearly demonstrate the kind of project to be completed, either an essay, a presentation, other creative work.
Completed abstracts will also include a provisional list of works cited containing a minimum of four assigned readings from the course and two external sources. External sources can be be peer reviewed academic sources, personal interviews, news media publications, or creative works whose relevance to the project is clear.
