This week we are going to explore the UNESCO Conventions. While this might seem a bit boring, the international laws are a key factor in repatriations of cultural patrimony, looting, and war booty (aka “protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict”). We will be using these laws to discuss looted art/artifacts in Museums and then specifically art stolen by the Nazis during WW2.
You will need to write at least 350 words about the two UNESCO Conventions I have attached (Regulations for the Execution of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict.pdf and Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property.pdf) and why they are important.

– how each convention came about
– what each covers, and
– how these Conventions further efforts to decolonize our museums.
– Use the 1983 Antiquities Market article (1983 AntiquitiesMarket.pdf) to help give context to the UNESCO Conventions with an example. You should cite at least one example from the article or peruse the web to find an article on your own to demonstrate the conventions in use with the return/preservation of cultural property as it relates to our exploration of decolonization.
