I have attached the four readings to this order
This week’s first two readings (Sismondo chap 3 and Mulkay) introduce us to Robert Merton’s concept of the scientific norms (CUDOS), counter-norms (IPODS), and the limitations of this sort of analysis.
The second 2 readings (Sismondo chap 4 and Rossiter) address the phenomena of stratification and discrimination in science, one example of which is Margaret Rossiter’s concept of the “Matilda Effect” – a tendency for women scientists to receive less credit than men.
What are some ways in which they examples Rossiter gives exemplify the power and limitations of norms as an explanatory concept? Are there ways in which the norms were used to justify discrimination against women?
What are some ways you can imagine that the social structure of science might be made more equitable?
You will have to engage closely with the reading so please read. Please address at least one of these two questions and refer to all of this week’s readings as you address this question in your 500-word reading response. Also please use quotes from each of the readings to illustrate your points, but make the quotes as short as possible since we have a word limit. Don’t use any outside sources other than the attached readings.
