This assignment focuses on interpersonal and relational concepts. For this assignment, you will select your favorite interpersonal pair from a movie or TV show and analyze their relationship. This pair can be romantic (like Meredith and Derek from Grey’s Anatomy or Landon and Jamie from A Walk to Remember), friendship (like Leonard and Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory or Tony Stark and Steve Rogers from The Avengers), or family (like Claire and Mitchell from Modern Family or Peter Parker and Aunt May in Spider-man). Be sure to select a pair you’re familiar with (or better yet – a movie or TV show that you have access to watch!) so that you can fully examine the relationship. In your paper, you will describe the relationship, talk about costs and benefits, discuss self-disclosure, and apply one of the interpersonal theories from Chapter 10 to the pair.
USE JESSE PINKMAN AND WALTER WHITE FROM “BREAKING BAD”
The Paper:
Briefly introduce the pair and describe their relationship. Who are they to each other, how did they meet, in what context does their relationship take place? What type of interpersonal relationship is this – romantic, friendship, family?
How does this relationship fit our definition of “interpersonal relationship”? What benefits does each person experience from being in this relationship? What costs does each person experience from bring in this relationship?
Discuss the role of self-disclosure in the formation and maintenance of this relationship. Choose a specific instance of significant self-disclosure for this discussion. Describe the interaction – what information was revealed, what was the reaction? What impact does this self-disclosure have on the relationship?
Select one of the following interpersonal theories from Chapter 10: Relational Dialectics Theory; Uncertainty Reduction Theory; Friendship/Romantic Relationship Development; Relationship Culture; Style of loving. Then:
Briefly describe the theory, including key terms and main claims.
Apply your chosen theory to the same specific interaction as you used in (3). What do you learn about your pair through using this theory? Do the interactions between this pair fit the claims and predictions of the theory you selected? Why or why not? Based on your chosen theory, what do you think this relationship will be like in the future?
Use at least two external scholarly sources from academic journals to help explain your concepts/theory and illustrate the relationships in the movie. (You can use the textbook, but it won’t count as one of the two external scholarly sources).
