Include two references: Evidence-based practice is something that is very important to help better our practice as nurses, and the care that we provide to our patients. Crabtree et al. discuss how nurses are key at turning evidence-based practices into reality (2016). It is important that we are able to understand the importance of this and be able to apply it to our shifts.   The healthcare organization that I chose to research is The Joint Commission, or TJC. The Joint Commission is an organization that is responsible for accrediting health care organizations and agencies (The Joint Commission, 2023). Most people have probably heard of TJC before because they come to hospitals to be able to accredit them and make sure that they are doing things correctly. When taking a closer look at their website, it is evident that their organization is involved in evidence-based practice. I found evidence-based practice mentioned in their evidence-based interventions section, as well as in their patient safety section (The Joint Commission, 2023).  From reading through their website, I believe that they are grounded in evidence-based practice by reading through their vision. The Joint Commission’s vision talks about all people receiving the safest and highest quality of care (The Joint Commission, 2023). When you take this into account with their other sections about evidence-based interventions and how to make patients have better outcomes, it is clear to see the EBP in The Joint Commission. They aim to make hospitals better by following the newest practices. Overall, the information that I discovered about The Joint Commission changed my perception of them. I think as nurses it is easy to get annoyed when TJC comes to visit because management can make it into a stressful situation. In reality, The Joint Commission is there to make outcomes better for patients, and to help reduce errors and detrimental outcomes. At the end of the day, the patients come first, and The Joint Commission shows this through their use of evidence-based practice. We should be able to follow after the Joint Commision and incorporate the newest evidence into our practices. This is especially relevant because Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt found that patients that are treated using newer evidence have better outcomes than patients who were not (2019).
