Most of our time in this course is being spent looking at the different regions of the world, their physical geography, and their various political, social, and environmental problems. However, with only 16 weeks in the semester, and some 200 countries in the world, this doesn’t leave us with a lot of time to cover any one country in detail. That’s where your project comes in. I want you to select a nation and write a paper that gives a more extensive breakdown of it. This should include its chief natural features, its demographics (things like age distribution, growth rate, ethnicity, language, religion, etc.), its history (nothing too detailed, but at least a few key events or figures in its past), significant problems it currently faces, either internally or in its relations with other countries or both, and that issue of human-environmental interaction: is there a serious environmental issue it’s dealing with, and if so, what?
To get you thinking outside our own boundaries, I’m excluding the U.S. from this project; otherwise, any nation is open to you to do your report on.
The project must be presented as a paper 1200-1800 words in length (approximately 4-6 pages), submitted to the course website. Pictures or maps may be included if you wish but are not required. In terms of sources for researching your choice, the college library has general reference works like the World Book Encyclopedia, as well as some more detailed books on individual nations. There are also a number of reputable online sources; sites like Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannia should be used sparingly but are okay for doing some initial research, while a much more reliable source is https://www.cia.gov/the-world-factbook/, which provides extensive if basic information on each country. Besides these and others, don’t neglect your textbook: it doesn’t delve into every single country, but some do receive particular attention, especially those associated with a certain geopolitical issue or controversy. Whatever sources you choose, make sure to cite them with footnotes or endnotes and a “Works Cited” page.
Submit your paper as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.
