Problem of the Day
The Acme (Ltd.) Medical company has developed a new drug that is intended to treat a
specific medical condition. As part of the drug’s safety assessment, the company wants to
determine if the drug has any adverse effects on liver function. They decide to test the drug’s
impact on the levels of a specific liver enzyme, alanine transaminase (ALT), which is commonly
used as a marker of liver damage.
The company designs an experiment as follows (note: Acme isn’t a … high quality … medical
company!). They recruit 42 healthy individuals, give them the drug, and then measure the
ALT levels. They know that the population average level of ALT is 20 units/liter. Are the
levels in the experimented-upon individuals higher than the population average?
The data from the trial is contained in the file alt.csv. Load it, and perform a hypothesis
test to answer the above question. Also compute an 89% confidence interval for the true mean
level of ALT in units/liter, given the data.
Write a concluding statement discussing these results in the context of experimental design,
and what you learned in the first two weeks of the course.
