Weekly Reflections: After completing the weekly assignments you will provide a reflection of your week’s learning process. This should include your personal thoughts on the information you learned, any complications or positive aspects of your learning experience. Elaborate on areas that you need to improve and things that led to your success. Grading will be based on the thoroughness of your responses and depth of your reflection, and spelling and grammar.Part 1
Submit a written discussion and two responses to peers for points in this assignment.
Discussion Topic:
During this discussion, please choose one of the questions below and respond. Responses should be well thought out, developing your ideas clearly. Please use proper grammar and spelling. Your response is due on Wednesday, and your replies to classmates are due Sunday.
1.Do you believe food waste indirectly causes the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers in our environment? Explain your reasoning.
2.Given the benefits of pesticides, should specific chemicals such as DDT be outlawed in the United States? Explain your reasoning.
3. Organic farming is popular among people who can afford it. Do you believe that organic food is safer than regularly produced food? If food can be grown without the use of pesticides and chemicals, should that become the new standard? Explain your reasoning.
Response 1(Abdullah):
Do you believe food waste indirectly causes the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers in our environment? Explain your reasoning.
Certainly, I believe that food waste is one of the main reasons for the use of pesticides and fertilizers due to several factors, including the accumulation of food in garbage and sometimes in gardens and open areas from human food waste, leading to the proliferation of insects in various places. This forces authorities to use pesticides to control these insects, resulting in significant environmental damage. On the other hand, we can see the extensive use of fertilizers by farmers due to food waste, which increases the demand for food to meet people’s needs. In the end, reducing food waste is a crucial and important step in promoting sustainable agriculture and reducing the environmental impact of excessive pesticide and fertilizer use.
Response 2 (fawaz):
Do you believe food waste indirectly causes the overuse of pesticides and fertilizers in our environment? Explain your reasoning.
I believe the issue of food waste does have an indirect impact on the excessive utilization of pesticides and fertilizers in our environment. This occurs when food is wasted and improperly disposed of. As we know, food waste accumulation provides an optimal environment for the growth of pests. Eventually, it may become necessary to increase the utilization of pesticides as a means of mitigating the rising issue of pests. Therefore, I believe that in order to address the links between food waste and high pesticide usage, we need to encourage people to reduce their waste food. This can be done through several solutions, such as helping reduce the quantity of edible food that ends up in landfills by supporting organizations that help redistribute food that has been discarded but is still edible to those who are in need. Also, we need to increase awareness among the public by highlighting the linkages between food waste and the high use of pesticides, which eventually will lead to health and environmental issues.
