To shape our discussion, students explore the concept by Expressing and reflecting the values and ideas of the collective.
Students are to address the following questions:
What evidence is there demonstrating how architects in future may express values and reflect ideas?
What is architecture’s relationship to
values and ideas?
What are the ways and means through the built form in which architects can utilize their capacities to lead to
possible (and positive?) futures in relation to values and ideas?
How might one leverage these ideas and projects to lead to possible futures?
To start, write a one or two-sentence statement on what you intend to discuss in relation to the topic. Identify written theories related to your paper subject (this is the “research question” or “thesis statement”).
– Develop a research strategy. This includes identifying material written by others that provides information and critical commentary on the paper’s subject.
– If you are including information on built work, ensure you identify the work properly (project name,
location, date of design, name of architect, name of client, building type), and cite your sources.
– Conduct a “literature review” that contains a brief synopsis of the content of source material and how
it relates to your subject and paper.
– Evaluate your sources and record your findings by downloading source material (or noting where it can
be found) and preparing a list of reference situations.
– As part of your literature review, identify at least five reputable sources
– Cite sources using Chicago Style
– Prepare an annotated bibliography
Process:
– The paper should clearly present the key questions that you are examining and the points you are making
in response to these questions. It should include full references and a listing of sources; all properly cited
and documented.
– Present a reasoned discussion on the rationale for your responses and those scholarly sources that
support your argument.
– The choice of writing style is yours; the paper can be written in the first person.
– Remember, you are making a case for how your evidence (researched and observed) supports the
questions you are addressing, its relation to the topic area you were given at the start of the course, and in
turn how your paper and its subject adds to your knowledge of agency of the topic you’ve been assigned.
– If you include images in your paper, reference these in the text. Ensure they are, fully captioned and cited.
