This paper requires you to demonstrate your ability to apply one of the three critical theories we examined in class (CRT, Lat Crit or Intersectionality) to a video, special event or guest speaker, and to then reflect upon your learning. What event or experience can you write about? You have many options: You can use any of the videos I recommend below (also in the syllabus), our guest speaker from OSD, an event you have attended or choose to attend on campus or even another event/video you think would lend itself to interpretation with Critical Race Theory, LatCrit, or Intersectionality). If there is something else that intrigues you, please check in with me in class about it. You will apply the theory you have chosen. Please note: I would prefer that you use one theory in more depth than all three on a surface level. 1) Overview of Learning: What event/film/experience have you chosen to write about? Briefly, provide an overview of the event/experience and why you chose this particular one to reflect upon critically? 2) Theoretical Grounding: Reflecting on readings and class discussions during the past weeks, what theories or concepts can you use to help you interpret the experience from a critical lens? Be sure to outline the key points of the theory(ies)/concepts you are using to ground your reflection paper and then demonstrate the links you are making. 3) Critical Reflection: What most surprised you about the experience, event or film? Put another way, what assumptions or expectations might you have brought to this experience or event? What may have been at the root of these assumptions or expectations (i.e. societal/familial/media messages, stereotypes, and/or implicit biases can you recognize?) How did this experience challenge or reinforce your values, beliefs, convictions, your sense of right and wrong, your priorities, and/or your judgments about diversity, different cultural groups, structural oppression and inequities? 4) Application to Practice: How can this new learning/awareness impact your social work practice as you prepare to, or continue to work with people and communities impacted by macro-level forces? Please aim for 3-4 pages Maximum. The format for the paper being turned in will involve writing the number of the question and then the answer. Even though these reflection papers are not research papers, students should still type their answers using 12 point Times New Roman font according to APA guidelines, including citing sources of the theories mentioned. Each paper should have one-inch margins all-around, with the right-side margin not justified. A cover sheet is not necessary, but please put your name in the top right corner with your last name listed first and then your first name (e.g., Cooper, Sheldon) and include a reference page. Any deviation of these formatting requirements will result in loss of points.
