This is my Black Popular Cultures class–
A note on papers: Make sure you proofread your papers and provide appropriate citations when referencing readings from our class. Papers will be evaluated based upon the following criteria:
outstanding analysis; solid examples and reasons provided to support views; clearly written.
fulfilled the assignment adequately; few if any grammatical problems or unclear sentences. C: fulfilled the assignment but either the analysis is insufficient or superficial and/or there were a number grammatical mistakes.
the assignment was not adequately fulfilled and/or there were a substantial number of grammatical errors; awkward and confusing sentences.
the assignment was not turned in within two weeks of the due date, or was not completed according to the criteria listed above.
Papers must include a title, your name, the course name and page numbers.
You must avoid –at all costs –direct quotations in your papers. Please paraphrase and cite only from course materials. For citation style, see the AAA style guide uploaded on the course content page of this course’s website.
There are three (3) film reaction papers (2-3 pages, 12 pt, double-spaced) assigned throughout the course out of the assigned films/documentaries in the Modules. One out of these three film reaction papers will be your GL film reaction paper. The GL film (Global Learning film) will be identified within the syllabus and Modules. Students can choose any of the required films in the course on which to write a reaction paper. It is recommended that students select a film that is relevant to the recent Module readings covered. The format of the film reaction papers will be posted under class resources.
The goal of these response papers is for you to identify the film’s theme(s), explore your personal reaction to the material presented, and make connections to class readings and discussions. Please do not summarize the film in your film reaction paper. Prior to viewing the film, you will be given questions to consider that are meant to stimulate active engagement. The following are suggested formats for these response papers:
Write a letter to the filmmaker or one of the persons who appears in the documentary conveying your response to the piece and posing any questions you have about the work or their participation in it.
Write a letter to a classmate who missed out on the readings that week, your mother, boss, etc. explaining what the film was about.
Create a dialogue between persons or characters who appear in the piece, an author we’ve read and the filmmaker, yourself and anyone in the film, etc.
Identify the key argument that the filmmaker is making and support or refute it
