The purpose of this written assignment is to facilitate your becoming familiar with the research in health education, community health education, and public health—and the key journals in which the work is published. The assignment should also help you to improve your critical analysis and writing skills and Achieving Competency 2: Policy in Public Health – More specifically, this assignment furthers your achieving competence in how to evaluate policies for their impact on public health and health equity. Your papers should be prepared in 11-point Times New Roman font and be no longer than 1,200 words in length. Use one-inch margins. The critiques should be organized along the following outline:
A. aim and gap in knowledge addressed
B. main methods, including design, population and sample, the intervention or maneuver, measures, outcome, and analytic approach
C. results
D. strengths and limitations
E. external validity and implications for policy or practice
Each written critique should be prepared according to the manuscript elements and format of a Student Paper as described in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). See the Student Sample Paper, pp. 61-67, for details.
Working from the above outline, write your critique of the article using well-organized paragraphs and grammatically correct English. Write in your own words, except where it is essential to quote directly from the paper, in which case the correct citation format prescribed by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition) should be used. Do not replicate the entire article; rather describe the key points. Do not just copy or paraphrase the abstract of the article; write in your own words. There should be evidence of careful, original thought in the critique. Proof-read and spell-check your document, and then proof-read and spell-check it again. In addition to what is required in the title page, make sure you provide the complete bibliographic information for the article you have reviewed and please include the URL for the article you reviewed.
In general, you will need one paragraph for each item from the outline. The critique should be a summary of the article, including evaluative comments on the quality of the study. In addition, please consider carefully the issue of external validity (i.e., the degree to which findings from the study can be generalizable to and relevant for populations, settings, and times other than those in which the original study was conducted), explaining what you believe to be the implications of the study for health education, community health education, and public health policy or practice. Your coverage of external validity might include the generalizability of the effect estimates across population subgroups or issues related to translation or adaptation (e.g., representativeness of participants, costs of the program/policy, ease of implementation, and
long-term intervention effects). Finally, you should include a brief concluding discussion of whether you believe the work makes a significant contribution, and why, and what you have learned from reading the article
