Submit Lab Five
This lab is designed to introduce you to the complex relation between the Earth and Sun. The geometry between the Earth and the Sun changes as the Earth orbits the sun, this coupled with the fact that the Earth is tilted relative to the plane of ecliptic and the rotational axis is always pointed to Polaris.
Objectives:
Identify Earth-Sun Relations during solstices & equinoxes.
Diagram vertical and tangent rays for given day.
Identify seasonal variations in solar declination and length of day.
Explore the relationship between intensity of radiation and solar altitude.
Use a Length of Daylight chart to determine maximum and minimum day lengths for various cities.
Use an Analemma to determine solar altitude for any given location and to determine the declination of the Sun for any given day.
Calculate the solar altitude of Santiago Canyon College on solstices, equinoxes, and selected additional days.
