Some of the most effective writings on global poverty are those by the Indian Economist and Philosopher, and also the 1998 Nobel Laureate in economics, Amartya Sen. Some of his most powerful expositions are those captured in his books titled Development as Freedom (1999 Chapter 4), N.Y. Knopf; and in his ” Capability and Well-Being” (1993) In Martha Nussbaum & Amartya Sen eds., The Quality of Life. Oxford: Clarendon. These writings are also captured in the World Bank’s World Development Reports (1993 and 2000/2001). Additionally, a book published by the World Bank titled Handbook on Poverty & Inequality (2009) by Jonathan Haughton and Shahidur R. Khandker, Chapter 9 gives a nice summary of Amartya Sen’s deprivation of capabilities perspective of poverty.
