Instructions:
Identify a specific criminal justice practice that you believe to be unethical (perhaps try to think
of an issue in CJ that you find to be MOST unethical). Write a brief paper overviewing the
scope and nature of the issue you chose and analyzing the ethical dimensions of the issue.
Conclude your paper with proposed solutions to address your identified issue.
Guidelines:
1. Pick a topic you are passionate about. What is something you think is in dire need of
changing?
2. Make sure your issue is narrow. For example, “the police” is far too broad a topic for this
paper. It must be a specific, narrow issue within policing (or courts, corrections, etc.).
3. Provide an overview of your issue. Describe it, define and describe important concepts,
provide statistics/prevalence estimates, etc.
4. Describe/explain why this issue is unethical?
5. What needs to be done to address the ethical issue you identified? What are some policy
solutions (or other types) that can be effective in resolving the ethical issue?
6. Be sure to use in-text citations. Every source cited in text must be listed on the reference
page and vice versa.
7. Format the paper according to APA style. A portion of your grade will be based on how well
you comply with APA formatting.
8. Writing, spelling, and grammar are important. I expect papers to relatively free of writing
errors/issues.
