Reflecting upon your decision and motivation to pursue the MSW, describe how attending CSSW will enable you to meet your goals as a social worker. What are your immediate and long-term social work goals?
At CSSW I hope to engage in different forms of advocacy for all communities, but a focus with LGBTQ+ rights. At my previous Practicum Placements I was with an organization that focuses on providing comprehensive care for LGBTQ+ individuals and individuals living/at risk of HIV. Talk about how if I was a student at CSSW I would love to get involved with The Social Intervention Group, and the GLOBAL HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER OF CENTRAL ASIA as their goals align with my interests for area of practice. https://sig.columbia.edu https://sig.columbia.edu/research-projects/be-online https://sig.columbia.edu/research-projects/bridge https://sig.columbia.edu/research-projects/connect-hip https://blogs.cuit.columbia.edu/ghrcca/en/projects/
Also as a student at CSSW I would utilize the Action Lab for Social Justice. (see lavender collective) https://actionlab.socialwork.columbia.edu/research
My short term goals include working in direct practice with LGBTQ+ individuals in any capacity. My long term goals would include working as the social worker on multidisciplinary gender-affirming surgery team as well as LGBTQ+ advocacy/policy work. On a multidisciplinary team my role would be working with individuals seeking gender-affirming surgery helping them navigate the process to ultimately have them live as their true authentic self with self-determination (cite from NASW code of Ethics as it is central to SW profession to uphold the values laid out), connecting individuals with services that support them during their recovery and as they move into life after gender-affirming surgery. https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English
