Student Health and Well-Being
The rising need for mental health services on college campuses is one of the most pressing problems in terms of students’ physical and mental health today (George et al., 2016). More than 60% of college students surveyed by NASPA reported having extreme anxiety during the past year, and more than 40% surveyed by NASPA reported feeling so depressed that it was difficult to function. Many students already struggle with issues related to their mental health, such as loneliness, stress, sorrow, and trauma, and the COVID-19 pandemic has only made matters worse.
Administrators in the field of student affairs have a lot riding on the success of their efforts to improve students’ emotional well-being. Ethical and legal concerns and a lack of resources and staff to meet the growing and diverse needs of students are among the obstacles. Stigma and barriers to access and utilization of mental health services among certain student populations, such as students of color, LGBTQ+ students, international students, and first-generation students, are also a problem. To combat these threats, student affairs professionals must implement policies and procedures that improve students’ emotional well-being (Hernández-Torrano et al., 2020).
Professionals in the field of student affairs need to embrace techniques and practices that can improve students’ mental health and well-being to meet these problems. According to Hanawi et al. (2020), some of these methods include creating and implementing universal prevention and promotion programs that can reach all students and foster a culture of wellness and resilience on campus; creating and providing tailored interventions and services that can meet the specific needs and preferences of different student groups and individuals; and establishing and maintaining partnerships and referrals with other campus units and community agencies that can provide additional support and resources. Student affairs professionals can use these methods to assist students’ emotional and psychological well-being better.
In conclusion, ensuring today’s students’ mental health and well-being is an important and multifaceted endeavor for the field of student affairs. Student affairs professionals can aid students in overcoming mental health issues and achieving their full potential by practicing proven tactics and practices.
