The purpose of the SWA is to get you think critically about philosophical issues on your own.
Topic: SWAs can be on any reading assigned class from the period between the last SWA and the reading assigned the day the SWA is due. For this SWA they can be on anything from Nagel to Kant. Choose one reading to engage with.
What this involves: SWAs must be both (a) explanatory and (b) critical.
(a) Explanation: A good format would be to explain as clearly as possible in your own words a portion of the reading. You should not aim to summarize the entire reading, but rather one argument, the main view argued for, or something used to support the view. For instance, you’d want to be summarizing what I would normally cover in a slide or two during lecture. This should be no more than about half of the SWA.
(b) Critical analysis: Then you need to draw out a criticism, question, provide additional support or argumentation, draw out a consequence of a view, a worry for the view, etc. This should make up the remaining half or 2/3 of the SWA.
These guidelines for writing a philosophy paper will be useful to read before you begin writing: http://www.jimpryor.net/teaching/guidelines/writing.html
Specifics: 1-2 pages. Double- spaced in a normal (e.g., Garamond, Times New Roman) 12-point font. SWAs must be be polished (i.e., free of typos and grammatical errors, clear and easy to understand). They should be submitted via Canvas. NO LATE SWAs will be accepted.
