1.Research and discuss alternatives to single-use plastic. What are some that you know of? How do you feel about using single-use plastics? Additionally, contrast the impacts that these alternatives may have on the environment, as the world exploits this new resource.
2.Landfills have the potential to leak toxic chemicals and gasses into the environment. They can also cause unpleasant odors and vector issues from birds and pests. The Miramar landfill is set to close soon, as it is quickly filling. Provide insight into where the new landfill should be located in San Diego. Explain why you want it there and what negative impacts you think it might have.
3.Research landfill methods and provide a summary of one that you found. Discuss the pros and cons of this specific method. Optional: Post diagrams or pictures to help explain how it works.

I did not know the Miramar landfill is closing soon. I read Miramar landfill is approximately 1,500 acres which I think that’s a lot of land. With it being closed soon, that’s a lot of trash we have contributed. I’m sure people who live in the Miramar area are excited that the landfill will be closed. I’m sure there is chemicals and unpleasant odors which circulates the near-by communities. I know when I pass a city trash vehicle that order is strong now imagine how stronger a landfill can affect the air quality and smell. I believe anywhere a landfill is planted, it will definitely affect local communities. With that being said, I feel a landfill should be located as far away from communities as possible, like the suburbs of Potrero or in the mountains. Our society is becoming more and more congested with people and there is new housing construction/commercial building being built everywhere. So I think anywhere the landfill goes, it’s going to affect people/animals. Plus people will not be happy if a landfill appears in their community. I wouldn’t be a happy camper if a landfill landed in my community because not only the odor, but the hazardous chemical/material in the air will affect the air quality for my family and I. If a landfill did show up in my community, I would make it a priority to move away quickly as possible.

There are several alternatives to single-use plastics that have been developed in recent years. Some of these alternatives include:
1. Biodegradable or compostable plastics: These are plastics that can break down into natural elements under specific conditions, such as exposure to sunlight or certain bacteria.
2. Paper products: Paper bags, cups, and straws.
3. Reusable containers and bags: Such as stainless steel water bottles or glass jars.
4. Natural fibers: Like cotton or bamboo.
I think single-use plastics have significant negative impacts. They contribute to pollution, especially in our oceans, and take hundreds of years to decompose. They also require fossil fuels for production, contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.
The impacts of the alternatives I mentioned above on the environment vary. While biodegradable and compostable plastics offer a potential solution, their proper disposal and industrial composting infrastructure must be considered to prevent them from ending up in landfills or recycling streams. Paper products, although biodegradable, have their own environmental consequences due to resource-intensive production processes. Reusable containers and bags generally have positive environmental impacts as long as they are used consistently.
