Its Christmas Eve, 2030 and 5 of the UK’s power stations have been taken offline. The entire South East of England is without power. Commuters are trapped in London’s underground as trains grind to a halt. Street lights go dark as panic slowly starts to set in. Hospitals responsible for caring for patients and admitting those with emergency health conditions can no longer process patients, find medical records and worse still keep essential life support machines running. Christmas has been cancelled and it will take days before power may finally be restored.
This is a scenario that the UK government fears may unfold if we do not take the necessary steps to protect our critical infrastructure. This is a scenario that is not unfamiliar to Ukraine or Estonia that have both been hit hard by cyber attacks over the last three years.
Do you feel that this is a scenario that we should be worried about? Or do you think that we are unlikely to fall prey to the same kind of attacks that have effected smaller states throughout Europe? What if anything can we do to prevent this? Even if these preventative measures are in place, what do we do if a cyber attack on this scale is successful and does shut down power throughout the south of England? What do we do in the aftermath of such an attack? Do we try to strike back?
