Choose ONE of the two countries that you have collected data for in 1.1 and 1.2 (not the United States).
2. As a first step, go to the CIA FactbookLinks to an external site., plug in your country, and read through the wealth of information available about the background, population distribution, environment, ethnic groups, languages, religion (Note: can the ethnic groups etc reflect a past historical tie from the background? No worries if not.), economy, people, etc. Don’t miss reading the Introduction. This will help add context to the demographic profile you are creating.
3. Scroll down to the “Economic Overview” section and after reading it, summarize some of the main points into a paragraph in order to give some context to your country and its population.
4. Look beyond for information about population-related policies pertaining to fertility, family, aging, migration, anything.
5. Go through the homework assignments carefully and using the background/contextual information you have gathered, create a 2 page informational sheet for an audience that has no clue about your country or its demographic trends. Here is an example from class readings. Not the best, but you get the overall picture.
6. Before creating the information sheet, plan it carefully. It should be a balance of text (demographic, economic, and context) and graphs (just a couple of relevant ones). Please don’t use random space fillers.
What information do you find relevant to include? What’s important to highlight? What background to include? Also focus on the demographic challenges that the country may face in the future and policy implications, whether fertility, aging, health, etc.
Again, assume that your audience knows nothing about the country.
3. Make the informational sheet interesting, eye-catching. The language, information, and graphs should be well-integrated. Do not use too many trend graphs as space-fillers or white space. Give it some planning and thought.
