For Part 2 of the Needs Assessment assignment, students will develop a thoughtful, well written, 2-3 page paper that describes the need(s) discussed in the interview. Papers should start with one to two paragraphs that provide details about the community the organization serves, the organization itself and its mission and services, and the individual interviewed.
Students will develop this paper using information obtained from the interview as well as data from other sources to further describe and explain the need. Where possible, data that speaks to the specific need(s) of the local area should be used, but it may be necessary to “zoom out” and include data about the larger problem, or the same problem in other areas as well. Essentially, this paper should be a combination of the data obtained in the interview and other data sources that you find related to the issue.
For example, if the issue discussed is a lack of homeless shelters in the area, in addition to including information from the interview, you would want to locate data on the number of individuals experiencing homeless in the area (if available) and/or the state, the number of shelters in the area (if any), how many shelters are needed, what, if any, organizations are working to address this need, as well as the causes and consequences of the need in the area.
Papers should be well organized, clear, and free of style and grammar mistakes. Essentially, the goal here is to report out what was shared during the interview along with other supporting data to highlight the specific need in a way that others could easily understand that need or begin to develop strategies to ameliorate that need.
