HOW TO WORK ON THIS ASSIGNMENT (EXAMPLE ESSAY / DRAFT)
Psychological disorders affect millions of people worldwide, and understanding these disorders is crucial for mental health professionals, patients, and the general public. This research paper focuses on two contemporary approaches, the Humanistic and Behavioral perspectives, to explore the psychological disorder of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
MDD is a mood disorder characterized by persistent sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable. According to the World Health Organization, MDD affects more than 264 million people globally, with women being twice as likely to be affected as men. Diagnostic criteria for MDD include experiencing a depressed mood or loss of interest in activities for at least two weeks, along with other symptoms such as changes in appetite or sleep, fatigue, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and difficulty concentrating.
Several factors can contribute to the development of MDD, including genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Individuals with a family history of depression, a history of trauma or abuse, chronic stress, or other mental health disorders may be at higher risk of developing MDD.
Various treatment options may be helpful for MDD, including psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle changes. Humanistic therapy, which focuses on the individual’s unique experiences and values, can help individuals with MDD gain insight into their emotions and behaviors. Behavioral therapy, which focuses on changing negative thought patterns and behaviors, can help individuals develop coping skills and improve their mood. Additionally, medication, such as antidepressants, can help alleviate symptoms of MDD.
From a Humanistic perspective, MDD is viewed as a result of an individual’s failure to meet their unique needs for self-actualization and personal growth. Humanistic therapy focuses on helping individuals with MDD gain a better understanding of themselves and their emotions to promote personal growth and fulfillment.
From a Behavioral perspective, MDD is viewed as a result of negative thought patterns and behaviors that contribute to a person’s low mood. Behavioral therapy focuses on changing these negative patterns and behaviors to improve mood and promote positive outcomes.
In conclusion, understanding the complexities of MDD from both the Humanistic and Behavioral perspectives is crucial in providing effective treatment options for individuals struggling with this disorder. As a result of this research, the author has gained a better understanding of the unique approaches offered by these two contemporary perspectives and their potential to help individuals with MDD. Further research in this area is needed to continue improving treatment outcomes for individuals with MDD.
