The safe drinking water act regulates drinking water to be safe for residents of the United States. Unfortunately the regulation doesn’t always work out. In the video, Dirty Water: Danger From the Tap they showed us areas of the U.S. where water was not up to standard. If pipes and fixtures in the home are causing contaminants in the water, who should be responsible for replacing these? Do you think that responsibility should be different based on income? Explain your reasoning.
If a municipality cannot afford to manage healthy drinking water standards due to pollutants existing in the water from other activities or due to aging infrastructure of the water system, who should be responsible for residents to get clean water? How should they provide the water? Who should pay the costs? Explain your reasoning.
Bottled water is not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act but is regulated by the United States Food and Drug Administration. The U.S. FDA expects water to be within the SDWA standards. Occurrences of contamination and outbreaks still occur from bottled water. Given this information and any other information you may find, what concerns due you have about bottled water? Do you think its a positive or negative consumer item? Explain your reasonings.
response 1 (abdullah):
2. If a municipality cannot afford to manage healthy drinking water standards due to pollutants existing in the water from other activities or due to aging infrastructure of the water system, who should be responsible for residents to get clean water? How should they provide the water? Who should pay the costs? Explain your reasoning. Access to clean water is a fundamental requirement for living, whether in old or new neighborhoods, and municipalities must provide it. If they are unable to do so, the government should intervene to solve this problem to prevent the spread of diseases, which can lead to substantial healthcare costs. The government should take responsibility for repairing what needs to be fixed, and residents can assist, but with minimal fees to lessen the burden on the government, especially in older areas where the population is largely comprised of the poor, who often have limited financial resources. The government should also consider upgrading all the old water pipelines, taking advantage of the many advancements available today that can facilitate the replacement of water distribution pipes.
response 2 (Heriberto): I think with bottled water being overseen by the US Food and Drug Administration is good. I want to think they are monitoring the situation closely so that there’s no issues that arise. I myself have not heard of outbreaks with bottled water, maybe there has been, but I have no knowledge of it. I believe bottled water is a positive for the consumer because it alleviates people’s lives. It makes it that much easier for people to purchase bottled water for their guest or when they are in a rush. We live in a fast pace environment that everyone is always on the go and grabbing something quickly is beneficial. We live in a environment that runs/operates at 100 miles per hour, meaning many families have a lot going on throughout his/her daily lives. I have heard of outbreaks with the water system for residents, but not in bottled water, which I continue to purchase until a situation arises. Purchasing of bottled can affect the environment with the recycling not being disposed correctly, but that needs to happen as a society.
