The paper should address these questions:
Explain the role of sociological perspectives, social institutions, and social structures as they relate to your topic. Cite your sources.
From Mill’s sociological imagination and your knowledge on social stratification and inequality you will elaborate on the sociological problem of interest. (See below for expectations regarding the Sociological Imagination)
Make connections to at least 2 concepts, themes, key terminology in the readings. Put these concepts in bold within the text.
Use statistics, data, graphics, charts to round out the information. Cite your sources.
The Sociological Imagination” is a perspective set forth by C. Wright Mills and contains three main elements or perspectives in analyzing social phenomena. I will be looking for evidence of your sociological imagination when I read your paper.
The ability to see “the inter-connection between our personal experiences and the larger social forces.”
The capacity to identify behaviors that are properties of social systems. (i.e. Our high divorce rate (50%) is a product of either a breakdown or change in society in the institution of marriage rather than a personal failing).
Identify the social forces acting upon persons. (Just as we are in a physical force field subject to invisible physical forces like gravity, we are also in a social force field exposed to external social forces that continually modify our behavior. We must learn to identify the invisible social forces that continually shape our behavior such as power, authority, peer pressure, culture, social structure, etc).
