D.E.S.C. – In class we learned about Assertive Communication. Pick a meaningful interaction in which you are having difficulty getting your needs met, and try using the D.E.S.C. method we learned in class. There are three steps:
1)- Explain the situation. In one sentence or two.
2)-Write down what you said for each letter.(You do not have to write down what the other person said.) Be sure to write what you said, instead of describing it. Write it like you are writing a play. For example:
Dowrite…. D. “ Mom, when you yell at me in front of my friends I get very upset.
Don’twrite…D. “I told my mother I don’t like it when she …….”
You need to write what you said for each letter:
D….Describe the problem clearly to the person involved (do not attack)
E …Express how you feel using “I” statements (avoid attacking)
S….Specify exactlywhat you would like from the other person
C…Consequences…Explain what will happen if the person does what you are asking ….. Explain what will happen if the person doesn’t do what you are asking
Give a short evaluation of what happened if possible.
