Many students tend to summarize their sources and include unnecessary details when writing
academic papers. While summarizing and highlighting a researcher’s methods is acceptable for
an annotated bibliography, research papers should be written in such a way that you compare the
“big-picture” takeaways from multiple articles. When conducting research, you must make
connections among resources and discuss themes and broad ideas related to your topic rather
than simply summarizing your sources. The purpose of this assignment is for you to gain
experience synthesizing resources for the Analytical Essay assignment.
INSTRUCTIONS
Choose two articles you plan to use for your Analytical Essay and complete the Comparative
Scholarly Works Template provided with this assignment. Please also review the Comparative
Scholarly Works Example to see an example of proper synthesis.
