What you know- bullets have both class and individual marks. Striations are individual marks found on bullets, and each gun has different striations, even if they are manufactured on the same production line. Shot guns, on the other hand shoot pellets- these pellets have no individual marks. the individual marks on a shotgun are on the casings- depending on the shotgun these can include extractor, ejector, breechblock and firing pin impressions.
Serial number restoration can be successful or not- when someone files off a serial number, if they file deep enough, the number will not be recovered- but since the metal has a memory, if they do not file it deep enough then the serial number can be recovered.
Footprints- we know that class characteristics on a footprint is the general pattern of the sole and the individual marks are the cuts, gouges and wear patterns. But we also know that we cannot with absolute certainty tell the weight or height of the person wearing them at the time they made the print. Sometimes we can make a mold of the print but due to the material the print was made in, individual marks might not be present.
With these things in mind- your scenario
Assume you are the investigator in charge of a triple homicide investigation. It appears to be a burglary gone wrong. Two security officers are dead and one workman. It is a warehouse for auto parts.
Security officer 1 was shot in the chest and appears to have died immediately (bullet)
Security officer 2 was shot in the leg and bled out- they both were in the same control room. (bullet)
The warehouse worker was in the back of the warehouse and killed by a shotgun wound to the back. There is one cartridge case on the floor.
As you look for possible points of entry and exit, you come across a large broken window with a partial footprint beneath it.
The door to the warehouse looks like it was forced open by a crowbar. Outside the door are tire tracks- the burglars took specialty motor parts which they would need to have taken by car or truck.
Analyze the evidence :
bullet 1 from security officer 1
bullet 2 from security officer 2
wound and casing from warehouse worker
partial footprint
tool mark from door
tire print patterns from warehouse
