Title: Winners and losers in the current financial system
It might be tempting to categorise the winners in the current financial system as the large corporations or influential individuals in the financial sector and the losers as society and the environment. However, this simplistic interpretation misses out significant and complex drivers behind both “business as usual” and innovation and improvement within the system.
No one really knows who the winners and losers will be in the financial system of the future – even the near future. Future-focused scenarios based on available scientific data can give us some strong clues and indications, but the actions taken by all actors within the system will determine which predictions come closest to reality. Regardless, a financial system built on sustainable outcomes for people and the planet should benefit a broader range of stakeholders.
Keeping in mind what you learnt about barriers to sustainable finance in this module, reflect on the following questions:
• Who do you think are the principal winners and losers in the current financial system? Where does your organisation sit?
• How will overcoming barriers to sustainable finance enable a broader range of stakeholders to benefit from a financial system built on sustainable outcomes? Why?
