The purpose of the broad-frame assignment is to connect theoretical/academic material on media effects and content to “real world” cases. For example, you can examine many of the subtopics related to media and COVID-19 through the lens of the theories we discuss in this course, such as agenda setting or framing. This assignment requires you to select a case that interests you and broadcast it publicly through some type of media channel. This may include traditional news outlets, social media or other media channels. You will then analyze the case using the theory in this course as a framework. The final assignment should be approximately 10-12 pages in length (double-spaced, standard font size; page count does not include references).
What you need to do is create a short draft/proposal for this case study assignment. The proposal will include some parts of the final case study paper: an introduction, part of the literature review, a methodology part and part of the media review. While you are welcome to outline your case study paper if this is helpful to your writing process, this assignment requires that you begin writing your paper in paragraph form rather than in outline form.
More information about each section can be found in the Assignment Guide for the Case Study Assignment. For the purposes of this proposal assignment, you should include:
Introduction: Describe the overall purpose of the paper (including a case description of the background/background; a brief preview of the type of media content that will be analyzed and the theoretical/academic literature that will be used; an argument for why this area of theoretical/academic literature is best suited to understand the case).
Literature Review: A summary of the theoretical/academic literature reviewed for the case (citations to at least 3 sources – 10 required for full text, but at least 3 for proposals). Be sure to explain the theory you are using so that it is clear how it applies to the case.
Methods: Identify the media content analyzed, provide a rationale for selecting the media content, and describe how the media content was collected.
Media Review: Selected media are analyzed based on insights related to the theoretical framework outlined in the literature review. The results of analyzing media texts are written in a narrative/thematic/descriptive format, with example quotes interspersed as evidence. In other words, describe the media source (video, text, image, etc.) and the topic, using quotations to illustrate it, enough so that the reader can understand how the examples relate to the theory and previous parts of the paper. For proposal assignments, you should have at least two media sources; you will add more to the full text.
References: Provide your references in APA style. You should also use APA style for in-text citations. You do not need to include other elements of APA format, such as a running title or abstract, but please make sure your name appears on the paper.
