Thailand is officially in a year-long mourning period in remembrance of His Majesty
King Bhumibol Adulyadej who passed away on 13 October, 2016.
There is a ban on all celebratory behaviour, which includes drinking alcohol in public, until mid-November. Bars and clubs have been closed while the country’s notorious red-light districts have also closed for business. Parties, concerts, festivals and product launches were cancelled or postponed until further notice. Businesses expect the restriction on the sale of alcoholic beverages to extend for 100 days.
Some economists cautioned that this would lead to a significant fall in the business in bars, pubs, restaurants and other entertainment places and affect the sale of alcoholic drinks.
