What is a press release?
Sometimes called a news release, a press release is either a verbal or written communication directed towards those working in the media for the main purpose of relaying something that is considered newsworthy in the field. These are usually sent to journalists, editors, etc. of any media format (news, magazines, television, etc.), as well as University public relations/media relations centers.
Why write a press release?
Media will publish information they deem noteworthy and a press release is a means of getting that attention for a specific topic. A press release is a critical part of public relations and sending such document allows the media to evaluate the content and further gain interest. It also helps the media as you have already done the research and provided content and thus they are likely to publish the topic if the draft is already prepared.
How to write a press release?
Title: The purpose of the title is to make clear the following: the audience of the press release, deliver a clear message, encourage the reader to read the body of the document, and of course get attention of the reader.
Body: Use the template below. The first sentence in the paragraph is called a lead. The purpose of the lead is to ensure that the reader knows exactly what this is about. The next 122 sentences should expand on the lead and give some more details. The following paragraphs should aim to answer the following: Who, what, when, where, why, and how of the topic.
