Purpose: Experiential essays will give students an opportunity to provide a written summary of exploration taking place outside of the course, and engaging with counseling organizations or counselors in the field. They present realistic, complex, and contextually rich situations, and involve problems to solve and/or questions to answer.
Parameters: Each experiential essay will be 1600 words in length, written in APA format, with an exception for the permission to use first person writing.
Prompt: Find 3-5 faith-based counseling practices in your county. At least one must be within a church-based setting, and at least one must be in a private practice setting. Review each organization’s website, social media pages, and any other available material (for example, brochures available in a church lobby).
For each selected organization, analyze the following:
How does this organization present the integration of faith into their counseling practice?
Does this organization appear to welcome individuals of diverse backgrounds?
Do you believe this organization practices implicit integration, explicit integration, or both?
What would you surmise to be this organization’s philosophy of integration?
What do you believe that this organization has done well?
What would you recommend that they do to improve?
